What Does it Mean to be Vegan?

Thinking about the vegan lifestyle may have you scratching your head. The path to vegan-hood is well traveled but there are still some things to learn. This includes knowing the changes you’ll need to make in your life, as well as why you should make those changes.

What is a Vegan?

Typically, a person who is vegan chooses to eliminate all animal foods and byproducts from their diet. In addition to cutting out animal based foods, this also includes staying away products made from animals, which includes leather and fur.

What Foods Aren’t Allowed?

Eliminating animal type foods and byproducts is a lifestyle choice. This includes all types of meat, such as poultry, fish, and red meat. Vegans typically stay away from anything that’s made with an animal in any way shape or form. Some vegans struggle to avoid dairy and eggs, but eliminating these products from your diet is possible and it’s worth it!

What Foods Are Allowed?

Still scratching your head at what type of foods are allowed with the vegan lifestyle? Even though animal products are not allowed on a vegan diet, there are many types of foods that are. As a vegan, you can eat multiple types of fruits and veggies, and let’s not forget the legumes and grains. Most vegans choose to steer clear of animal products while preparing meals, but there are still a variety of animal product substitutes available on the market. Almond milk and soy milk are used as milk substitutes, and there are even meat substitutes such as vegan hotdogs and vegetable burgers.

Why Do People Become Vegan?

People become vegans for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is because of obligations to their morals. Many vegans feel that killing animals for meat and using them to produce eggs, milk, and other products is cruel. Being a vegan is all about NOT supporting the inhuman conditions dairy cows and chickens are forced in to in order to produce enough supplies to meet the food demand.

Vegans also make this lifestyle commitment for health reasons. A vegan diet consists of many healthy foods, all of which are high in nutrients. The foods eaten during this lifestyle are usually lower in cholesterol and fats, which has a positive impact on their health. A vegan even has less of a risk of developing certain diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.

As you can see, there are many reasons to become vegan. Being a vegan means you are increasing your health and are not taking part in animal cruelty, all by eliminating animal products from your diet.
