Why Livestock Trucks Disturb Me

cattle_truck

The other day I was driving along the highway and passed a cattle truck full of cows on their way to who knows where (most likely to be slaughtered). Every time I pass one of these trucks it really bothers me and it makes me think of how people were shipped off to concentration camps in “cattle cars” during the Holocaust. I guess what really disturbs me is that while I see both being equally appalling, most people drive by cattle trucks and never think twice about it. Why is it that if people saw a truck full of humans being shipped off to their death in over crowded, disgusting (animals have to piss and shit where they stand), too hot or too cold conditions, they would outraged, but they see this happen to animals all the time and never do anything about it?

Poor little piggy:(

Poor little piggy:(

Although it makes me really sad to see those trucks at least I know that I’m not contributing to the problem. I can pass that truck with a clear conscience knowing that one of those cows, sheep, pigs, whatever it is, isn’t going to end up on my dinner plate. Can you say the same? Think about it the next time you pass a livestock truck and maybe you too will decide to Go Veg:)

  1. It's just heartbreaking to get stuck behind one of these. It seems to always happen to me on the way to visit my mom and there are little ears, tails, or feathers being forced out of the holes because it's so crammed. :(

I definitely feel for those animals when I see them. It's so sad :( Your comparison to human torture and slaughter is appropriate.

  3. The worst. Even if most people don't notice these, I bet children do.

Actually in the holocaust there were very few sympathizers, so it's not far of a jump to assume that as long as it wasn't someone they knew.. they wouldn't care, which is a very similar case with animals. I think if people actually had to go out and kill the animals they eat, more would probably be vegetarians, if not vegans.

Are animals not on this planet to feed us? What about the food chain? Even though we are not cave-men/women any longer, we still need to eat. I am prepare vegan dishes due to health issues with some animal fats and also fact of how animals are raised. Organically raised animals I can eat – and since difficult and expensive, I end up eating very little meat. I do eat fish and chicken – and even then have to be careful due to what animals are fed. I do not have a problem with killing animals for food or being raised for food – and don't get that part of the discussion regarding vegan. I do not believe it can be compared to slaughtering humans.

    Otherwise love your recipes :)

It is understandable that there were few sympathizers – it was a time of war, and fear must have permeated. If we had to hunt our own food, we would certainly be eating as our ancestors did – meat when we could manage to capture/kill and supplement with other food such as berries and vegetables and some things that people now would never eat maybe, such as insects. The discussion does not make any sense. I don't think our ancestors were vegans or had feelings for animals so much that they did not eat.

Why? As a child I was educated about farming, and had a grandfather that raised beef, and dairy cattle, as well as grew cash crops – potatoes, corn, apples, beans, strawberries etc. We learned early that the beef cattle as well as pigs were food – and thought nothing to eat 'Buddy' – as that was his purpose in life. Do we get upset about screaming vegetables – they are living entities as well :)
There are many more important concerns regarding meat = and how the animals are fed and raised – such as use of antibiotics, human growth hormone, feeds they are given and overcrowding in barns. This is all done to push the limits of producing the highest yield and most dollars for one animal. This is wrong and also harmful to humans for eating. This concerns me more than fact we are eating animals, as we should be eating them.

  8. They make me sad too. I can't help but feel so helpless and sad for these animals. :(
